History
Whanganui UCOL (Matapihi ki te Ao) is the overarching name given by Whanganui iwi to this new tertiary education centre. It means Window of Opportunity to the World – a name chosen because it encompasses all people and reflects the opportunities education can bring.
Opportunities at Whanganui UCOL
The opportunities to be offered here – now and in the future – are very special. The Whanganui UCOL campus provides an unparalleled opportunity to study in state-of- the-art facilities, in a mix of architecturally designed or restored heritage buildings, constructed with environmentally friendly and sustainable materials.
Campus
The Michael Payne Centre is the main campus building on Rutland Street. The Henry D Bennett Centre (formerly the Backhouse building) houses the School of Fine Arts and the Whanganui School of Design. The Edith Collier Centre houses the Quay School of the Arts. The Clarrie Pearson Centre, once the old County Council Building, is now our student block. The John W. Scott Learning Hub, in the Michael Payne Centre, contains our Library and brilliant new learning centre where students can – literally arrange things, including the furniture – to suit themselves.
Skilled staff
Whanganui UCOL has a team of skilled, creative and professional staff - both academic and support staff that are committed to the success of the community and of New Zealand.
Tertiary education partnership
The Whanganui UCOL campus is the base for Whanganui's groundbreaking and award winning tertiary education partnership, the Whanganui Tertiary Education Collaborative Venture.
The venture won the 2009 award for Successful Cooperation – working successfully with other education providers, the community or industry - in annual awards by the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics of New Zealand (ITP New Zealand).
The Whanganui venture is a New Zealand first in the tertiary education sector, in which a government-funded institution (UCOL), private providers and support agencies, such as Career Services, StudyLink and Work and Income New Zealand, work together to improve outcomes for students.
